Abstract
Although covering Western images of the P R China generally, the lecture will focus on the twenty-first century, and especially on China’s rise at that time. There will be some consideration of how the West views China’s economic growth, but also its strategic and military rise, and the increase of its influence in the world. The lecture will introduce some theories, both positive and negative, of China’s rise. In addition, it will offer a small range of Western images of China’s future. Finally, it will attempt to offer some explanation of Western images of contemporary China and, specifically, of China’s rise.
