About Traditional Chinese Music Summer School

The UQ School of Music is delighted to present a Traditional Chinese Music Summer School lead by Guest Lecturer Dr Yang Yang from Shaanxi Normal University, Xi'an, China, exploring the UNESCO-recognised Intangible Cultural Heritage of China's music.

The summer school runs from Monday 15th January 2018 and Friday 19th January 2018. Each day will contain two sessions: 9:00AM to 1:00PM and 2:00PM to 5:00PM and will be held with the UQ School of Music.

The summer school contains five lecture sessions, four workshops and one short performance session. Attendees will recieve an introduction to eleven UNESCO music Intangible Cultural Heritages in China, comparisons between music styles and genre, an exploration of social-cultural aspects of music traditions, as well as extended readings and discussions on traditional Chinese music.

No professional music knowledge or performance skills are required. A basic understanding of music, however, aligned with some knowledge of Chinese culture would be an advantage. All are welcome!

You will be introduced to a wide-range of music practices across China via classroom lectures and demonstrations. You will be encouraged to join workshops to further develop your understanding on approaches of music making in Chinese contexts. Short singing performance activities will be organised to enrich your experience in music learning. Feedback will be given on written group reports on course learning and performing activities.
