Our short courses in Chinese language and culture

We provide a gateway to Chinese language and culture, including a variety of short courses for UQ students and staff and for the broader community.

3. Staff Development: Chinese Business Etiquette – Basic

China is one of the leading trading partners to both Australia and to Queensland. Highlighted by the recent formalisation of a China-Australia Free Trade Agreement (ChAFTA), there is an expectation that Sino-Australian engagement will continue to increase through various avenues including trade, investment, education, research and cultural exchange.

This short course will benefit participants that regularly interact with Chinese students, visitors, academics, researchers, and industry/government connections, providing an understanding of key cultural aspects and how they shape behaviours, traditions, and interpretations.

This course will enable participants to: engage with Chinese people - in initial contact, introductions, greetings and compliments, establishing initial relationships; do business or work with Chinese people (basic principles) - negotiating techniques, body and sign language, decision making processes (basic principles); and learn about basic elements of the Chinese culture, from background principles of the language, superstitions, basic taboos, festivals, diet culture, cuisine, and dining etiquette.
