Professor Ping Chen is Director of Confucius Institute at The University of Queensland. He obtained his MA in Chinese from the Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) in Beijing, and MA and PhD in Linguistics from University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He held teaching, research and administrative positions at UCLA, University of Oregon, Institute of Linguistics at CASS, and City University of Hong Kong before joining The University of Queensland in 1991. He served as Head of Department of Asian Languages and Studies, and Acting Head of the School of Languages and Comparative Cultural Studies at UQ. 

Researcher biography

Professor Ping Chen is Chair in Chinese Studies. His research interests include functional syntax, discourse analysis, semantics, pragmatics, sociolinguistics, and historical linguistics. His current research projects are related to information structure in Chinese, and uses of languages in present-day China.

He teaches in the areas of Chinese language and linguistics.
