Professor Yuan received his PhD degree in aeronautical engineering in 1992 from Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, China. He changed his research direction to wastewater management when he took up a post doctoral fellowship at Ghent University, Belgium in 1994. He joined the Advanced Water Management Centre at The University of Queensland in 1998, and was promoted to Deputy Director in 2001. He is one of the key drivers in transforming the Centre into an internationally leading research institution in water management with more than 100 staff and PhD students, and an annual research budget approaching ten million dollars.
His core skills include mathematical modelling, process optimisation, and project leadership. His research interests, reflected in his extensive publication history of one book and more than 250 papers, include corrosion and odour management in sewers systems, fugitive greenhouse gas emissions from wastewater systems and biological nutrient removal and recovery.
Professor Yuan currently leads a national research program on corrosion and odour management in sewers, involving five Australian Universities and most of Australia’s major water utility companies. His commitment to collaborative research includes projects with several Universities in China.
