The "Hanyu Qiao" Chinese Proficiency Competition for International University Students is a yearly international contest and is well-known in cultural and educational exchanges worldwide. In the 2022 Competition, the participant Martin Wirkus from QUT won the 2nd prize of Oceania in the international competition. The 2023 Queensland Preliminary Competition will be held on May 13 and organized by the Tourism Confucius Institute at Griffith University and supported by the Confuicus Institute at The University of Queensland.

All the registered university (and TAFE) students in Queensland are welcome to participate in the competition to showcase their Chinese language skills and understanding of Chinese culture.

Eligibility:

To be an eligible contestant, you need to be:

  • An enrolled university or TAFE student in Queensland
  • A Non-Chinese national
  • Born and raised outside of China
  • Not speaking Chinese as your mother tongue.

Note

The FIRST-place winner in the Queensland Preliminary round will be one of the representatives on behalf of Australia to participate the international final.

Divisions

Participants can choose BASIC DIVISION or ADVANCED DIVISION for registration:

  • BASIC DIVISION applies to participants with short-term Chinese language learning experience or with relative levels of HSK 1-2.
  • ADVANCED DIVISION applies to those with long-term Chinese language learning experience or with relative levels of HSK 3 or plus.

Competition Components

The Competition contains two parts: Chinese speech and Culture show covering 60% and 40% respectively. Participants of each division can choose to present both Speech and Talent Show or choose only one program either Speech or Talent Show.

  1. Chinese Speech: (60%)
  • Participant delivers a Chinese speech within 3 minutes with followed up questions from judges.
  • Participants can choose their preferred topics for the speech based on the main theme “One World, One Family”.
  1. Culture-related Talent Show: (40%)
  • Participants can choose various culture and arts forms to present their understanding of Chinese culture, such as calligraphy, Chinese painting, Chinese song, Chinese style of dance, martial arts, paper cutting and tea arts.
  • The culture-related component is 5 minutes.

Awards

The 1st prize winner of Advanced Division (combined of both Speech and Talent Show) will be offered a return ticket to China as well as meals and accommodation to participate the international competition. The winner will have an opportunity to win scholarships for study at Chinese universities.

The 2nd Prize winner of the Advanced Division (combined of both Speech and Talent Show) will be offered return tickets to China as well as meals and accommodation to observe the international competition.

Award winners will get both certificate and gifts for the performance.
