The "Chinese Bridge" Chinese Proficiency Competition for International University Students is a large-scale international contest sponsored by the Office of the Chinese Language Council International (Hanban) in Beijing, and is well-known in cultural and educational exchanges worldwide. The competition is held yearly and is organised and carried out by the Organising Committee. This is the 15th "Chinese Bridge" Chinese Proficiency Competition. To date nearly 600,000 college students from 110 countries have participated in the competition.
The top two university participants win an all-expense-paid trip to China (including round-trip tickets, accommodation, food and transportation within China) to experience this amazing country first-hand and compete with other students from around the world in the grand finals. It is also possible for non-university students to compete in the Queensland Preliminary Competition.
The Tourism Confucius Institute at Griffith University and the Confucius Institute at The University of Queensland are co-organising the 2016 Queensland Preliminary Competition with the goal of making it the biggest and most successful competition to date.
Eligibility
All participants are to be non-native Chinese speakers.
University Students Division
This Division is open to students undergoing tertiary education (TAFE or University) in Queensland.
Non-University Division
This division is open to participants who are not currently in university and are above 18 years of age.
Divisions & Subdivisions
There are two main divisions (University Division & Non-University Division) and each consists of two subdivisions (Basic & Advanced):
- University Students - Basic Division
- University Students - Advanced Division
- Non-University Contestants - Basic Division
- Non-University Contestants - Advanced Division
Competition Categories
The competition consists of :
- Cultural Knowledge written test (compulsory)：20 points, 30 minutes
- Oral Presentation (optional): 40 points, Basic Division for 2-3 minutes, Advanced Division for 3-4 minutes
- Cultural Arts Performance (optional): 40 points, 5-6 minutes
Cultural Knowledge
This is a 30-minute written test involving multiple-choice and short answer questions about the Chinese language and culture. The examination syllabus will be published on the Internet before the competition. It should be noted that the questions for the Basic Division will be written by Chinese Teachers from Griffith, UQ, and QUT and will relate to daily living.
Oral Presentation
Contestants in the Advanced Division will orally present a short reading or speech on a chosen topic relevant to “Dreams for a Brighter Future”. This can be an original work or a short extract from a Chinese newspaper, article, magazine or poem. Contestants in the Basic Division are free to choose their own topic.
Cultural Arts Performance
This is a chance to showcase your talent and the effort that you have invested in learning Chinese. Your performance can be anything related to China’s unique culture, including singing, dancing, playing a musical instrument, calligraphy, Chinese martial arts, recitation of a Chinese poem - the possibilities are endless!
Tips
If you desire to simply showcase your talent and have fun, the Basic Division is your best option. If you are keen to win a FREE trip to China and represent Australia in the Chinese Bridge Competition, you should register for the University Student Advanced Division.
Each player will receive one-to-one guidance from the Tourism Confucius Institute.
You are invited to bring your friends and relatives to the venue. Everyone will get a free lunch and have the chance to win one of the many prizes in the lucky draw. The first prize is a round-trip ticket between Australia and China.
Prizes
In each group, attractive prizes will be awarded to the top three contestants of each category in each division. There are also three All Round Prizes in each division for contestants who participate in all three categories. The first and second-prize winners of the All Round University Advanced Division will win a one-month trip to China on a Confucius Institute Scholarship. The winners will also represent Queensland in the international Final in China. A panel of judges appointed by the organizing committee will adjudicate the events. Their decision will be final and no appeals will be entertained.
