On the 7th of September, students from St Pauls School, St Benedicts, Clairvaux MacKillop College and The Lakes College participated in the Chinese District Network Schools Immersion Day hosted by The Lakes College. The day was organised by The Chinese District Network School Association and supported by Confucius Institute at The University of Queensland.

The origin of CDNSA came from a group of dedicated and passionate Chinese teachers who wanted to form a network that provides students opportunities to interact and connect with likeminded peers from other schools, as well as work in a total immersion learning experience beyond the classroom.

Students took part in a wide range of traditional Chinese activities including dumpling making, Chinese blow ink painting, paper cutting, calligraphy writing and maths games. The way to a person’s heart is through their stomach and Chef Joel from Wunya Café, The Lakes College fed over 150 hungry teenagers with authentic Chinese cuisine.

There were BBQ Pork Buns, Pork Dim Sims and Spring Rolls for morning tea followed by sizzling Mongolian Beef, mouth-watering Sichuan Chicken and Salt & Pepper Squid with a bed of fragrant Jasmine rice for lunch. Everyone was eager for more. The day finished with students displaying their Chinese speaking skills at its inaugural Chinese Speaking Competition.

Thanks to all students and teachers from the participating schools and the Confucius Institute at The University of Queensland. The immersion day was a huge success and has encouraged us to continue our language learning journey and connect with others in the wider community. We are looking forward to having another fun and enjoyable day in 2018.
